UHI leads in education subject area: first in Scotland, third in the UK

The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) has been ranked first in Scotland and third in the UK for the ‘education’ subject category in the 2026 Guardian University Guide, out of 91 institutions.

This achievement highlights UHI’s strong commitment to delivering research-informed, high-quality teaching and practice-based learning experiences in the field of education, with an overarching focus on student support, health and wellbeing.

Karen Lowing, Associate Dean for Education at UHI, responded to the announcement:

"I am delighted that UHI's education subject area has been ranked first in Scotland and third in the UK in the 2026 Guardian University Guide. This is fantastic news and a testament to the excellent subject knowledge, practice, and exceptional commitment education staff consistently provide our students. Our staff continue to reach above and beyond to ensure our students receive a supportive, high-quality educational experience that truly prepares them for their future careers."

Within the education subject area, UHI offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in early learning, childcare, youth, primary, secondary and Gaelic teaching, practitioner enquiry and education leadership. Courses combine academic study with placements in diverse education settings. Students’ progress towards careers such as early learning and childcare, community learning and development, teaching, and education leadership. With a focus on research-informed learning, practice-based experience and professional development opportunities, UHI graduates are fully prepared for their chosen careers and equipped to make a positive impact across a range of local and national education landscapes.

Kayleigh Hunter, from Auchterarder, studied BA (Hons) Childhood Practice at UHI Perth:

“My studies at UHI have played a significant role in shaping and supporting my career. The knowledge and practical experience I gained have provided a strong foundation in child development, safeguarding, and professional practice, skills that have been essential in every childcare role I’ve undertaken. The supportive academic environment at UHI also helped me grow into the professional I am today, developing key skills like communication, organisation, and reflective practice. I wouldn’t be where I am now without the opportunities provided by UHI."

Eva Lovell, from Helensburgh, is studying BA (Hons) Moral and Philosophical Studies with Religious Education with UHI Inverness:

“I chose to study at UHI because the programme offered exactly what I was looking for – a degree with a teaching qualification. I enjoy the engaging philosophy classes and the friendships I’ve made. My lecturers are brilliant, and the course has been run very efficiently. The placements have been invaluable, treating me as an educator rather than just a student. This has allowed me to build my practice and confidence in various settings, as well as create networks for future career opportunities."

Kyle MacLennan, from Scone, is an alumnus of BA (Hons) Food, Nutrition and Textiles Education at UHI Perth, he said:

“I considered other universities, but UHI was closer to home and perfectly suited my career aspirations in teaching. The course is tailor-made for aspiring home economics teachers, offering practical experience in cooking, textiles, and teaching methods. I gained invaluable experience through placements across multiple authorities and sectors. The one-to-one support I received throughout my degree was crucial to my success in both my studies and my career."

UHI’s education programmes are designed to offer flexibility through part-time and distance learning options, enabling students to balance their studies with work commitments. With a wide range of placements in primary and secondary schools, early learning settings, and youth work organisations, students gain valuable real-world experience that enhances their academic preparation and career readiness.
