The Treasure Trove Unit are responsible for recording and processing archaeological finds made by both the public and professional excavators across Scotland. Dr Fontaine assists with recording finds, responding to queries, and preparing for committee meetings, while also meeting with finders at the museum and through outreach events. She is responsible for liaising with finders and museums in the Highland Council and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar areas, as well as for processing carved stones found across Scotland.
Janel holds a BA in History from the University of Florida and an MA and PhD in Medieval History from King’s College London. She has worked in research-led and commercial archaeology in the UK and the Czech Republic and spent 10 years working in UK Higher Education before joining Treasure Trove in 2022. Her research interests are in early medieval history and archaeology, and she has published journal articles and book chapters on various aspects of early medieval slavery. Her first book, Slave Trading in Early Medieval Europe, is forthcoming with Manchester University Press.
